Middlesbrough were under an inexperienced manager, hence the aim being to play good football and to stay clear of relegation. To an extent, Boro did achieve exactly that. Southgate has been successful in establishing himself as a manager and in return, has earned the respect of the players and fans alike. With the departure of quality goal-getters it has robbed Boro of vital experience upfront and it's this department on which they need to work the most. However, with Woodgate who is one of the best defenders in England being at the helm, Middlesbrough would look to push for the top 10 spot.
